America in Color: Muslim Representation on TV from All-American Muslim to the Present
An Evening of Conversation presented by ATX TV, MPAC’s Hollywood Bureau, and Mike Mosallam Productions

What does it mean to be an American, and in what ways does television influence and transform our personal definitions of this identity?

On the 10th anniversary of the TLC docuseries All-American Muslim, ATX TV, MPAC’s Hollywood Bureau and Mike Mosallam Productions will explore the universal themes of what it means to be an American, seen through the Muslim lens. They’ll discuss these questions and more during an evening of conversation around the stories and portrayals of Muslims on TV over the past decade, the experiences of the actors and real people responsible for these portrayals, and how these narratives have shaped our definition of what it means to be “American.” The event will include:

A Conversation with Mike Mosallam
A conversation with Mike Mosallam, co-creator of All-American Muslim, discussing the importance of All-American Muslim as the first authentic representation of Muslims on TV, the challenges of creating content featuring underrepresented communities, and the work of his production company on projects exploring Muslim/LGBTQ+ intersectionality.

All-American Muslim Reunion with Cast & Creators
A look back at the TLC docuseries All-American Muslim (2011), which followed the stories of five Muslim American families of varying religiosity in Dearborn, Michigan. The groundbreaking series was the first to show a cross-section of American Muslims on a mainstream network. Co-creators Mike Mosallam & Noessa Higa will reunite with cast members on the series’ 10th anniversary for a live discussion about being the first to represent “the American Muslim” on TV, how it affected their lives and faith, and how they continue to reconcile their religion, culture, and national identity.

Panel Discussion presented by MPAC’s Hollywood Bureau
A panel discussion with Muslim creatives Rizwan Manji (Schitt’s Creek, The Magicians, Perfect Harmony, Mira, Royal Detective), Amin El Gamal (Breaking Fast, Good Trouble, Prison Break), and Ubah Mohamed (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow), moderated by Sabrina Saddiqui (Wall Street Journal, CNN), about how the landscape of Muslim portrayals has evolved from All-American Muslim to the present. They will discuss the power of stories to connect people and the impact that television has on shaping public opinion and perception.

The event will air live on November 10, 2021, on ATX TV’s official YouTube Channel and is FREE to attend. Please RSVP HERE.

We hope you will join us for this engaging and insightful event!
