Season 8: The Pitch Competition

THE PITCH COMPETITION

Welcome, TV Creators!

This year’s ATX Festival’s The Pitch Competition is getting an upgrade as we partner with prize provider, Southwest Airlines, as part of their On the Rise initiative to support up-and-coming creative talent. Southwest Airlines will provide round-trip air travel to Austin, TX for the ATX Festival, plus three nights of hotel accommodations in Austin for ten (10) lucky finalists, who will pitch their best original ideas to a panel of industry judges LIVE at Season 8!

Ready for your shot? Read on!

Let’s Get Started!

Thank you for your interest in participating in ATX’s annual The Pitch Competition! The focus of this competition is YOU, the burgeoning undiscovered TV writer — and giving you the chance to take your idea for the next great TV show from pitch to screen by opening the doors to some of  TV’s greatest showrunners and executives

In working closely with our panelists, alums, advisory board, and competition partners, our ultimate goal is to give you an opportunity to not only pitch your idea to studio or network partner, but to provide one-of-a-kind access to TV’s top decision-makers, and – hopefully – get your show made! (We may open the door, but it’s your ideas and talent that keep you in the room!)

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Submissions Open: November 16, 2018
  • Submissions End: January 18, 2019
  • Round 2 Selections Announced: February 8, 2019
  • Semi-Finalists Announced: March 6, 2019
  • Finalists Announced: April 1, 2019
  • Finalists must confirm attendance: April 30, 2019
  • Live Pitch Competition: June 6 – 9, 2019 at ATX Television Festival in Austin, TX (exact day/time to be announced at a later date)

YOUR ENTRY

Each submission consist of two parts:

  1. A ninety (90) second video to pitch us (and participating television executives and creatives) your great idea. It can be any kind of scripted series you want – a half hour sitcom, an hour drama for cable, a hybrid for original online content. The only two requirements are that your pitch must be for a scripted (non-reality) series, and your video cannot exceed ninety (90) seconds. (We’re checking!)
  2. A five to ten (5-10) page script sample of the pitch/series you are submitting. For our veterans of the competition, this is a NEW RULE, but yes, all written submissions MUST MATCH the pitch concept entered. This is your chance to show executives that you not only have a great idea, but you have the chops to write it too!  [Note: it can be any 5-10 pages, not necessarily the first 5-10 pages].

THE ROUNDS

Round 1: Open submissions! Anyone with an idea for a new show and a five to ten (5-10) page script sample may submit. ATX Television Festival will screen and read all submissions, and select the top twenty-five (25) from our open submissions to advance to Round 2.

Round 2: The top twenty-five (25) submissions from Round 1 (open submissions) will join an additional twenty-five (25) chosen by The Black List and Sundance Episodic Lab partnership for a total of fifty (50) submissions to be screened and read by our Round 2 judges. These judges (made up of staff writers and junior executives) will select twenty (20) semi-finalists for Round 3. (More about those partnerships can be found below!)

Round 3 (Semi-finals): The twenty (20) semi-finalists will be judged by our panel of industry professionals, including top executives from the festival’s network/studio partners (more on them below!) – who will select ten (10) finalists.

Round 4 (Live Finals): Ah – the Live Pitch Finale! This is where the magic happens, folks! The ten (10) finalists chosen by our industry professionals will compete LIVE at ATX Television Festival Season 8 in June, with three (3) full minutes to pitch their ideas. Once all finalists have pitched, our panel of judges (showrunners & executives) will  choose two runners-up and a first place winner. [Note: runners-up prizes are also new this year!]

HOW TO SUBMIT

1) Have an idea. Got it? Good.

2) Film your ninety (90) second pitch, and then upload it as an unlisted video on YouTube (See – What is an unlisted YouTube video). This can be as simple as recording yourself on your iPhone, or as elaborate and high production value as you want to go. It’s your call — just make it’s no more than ninety (90) seconds. Any submissions over ninety (90) seconds will be disqualified and submission fees are non-refundable.

3) Write a five to ten (5-10) page script sample of your pitch (can be any 5-10 pages, not just the first 5-10)! Remember: the script sample must match the pitch submitted. Title pages do NOT count towards your page count, and all samples must be submitted as a .PDF.

4) Complete the payment form on Prekindle & submit your $40 submission fee.

5) Once your submission fee has been processed, you’ll receive an email receipt directing you to our submission form. There you will enter your name, pitch title, unlisted Youtube link, writing sample, and accept the Terms & Conditions.

6) That’s it! Well done, you did it! If you are selected for Round 2 of the Pitch Competition, you will be notified via email by February 8, 2019.

Good luck y’all!

IMPROVE YOUR ODDS with our Partners:

In addition to the standard submission process, you can also opt-in for Pitch Competition consideration via our partners at The Black List and Sundance Episodic Labs!

Between 11/19/18 – 1/7/19, writers with original pilots hosted on The Black List may opt-in for consideration based on their hosted scripts. If your script is one of the top fifteen (15) chosen from The Black List selection process, you will have the option advance directly to Round 2 of ATX Festival’s The Pitch Competition. At that time, you will be given a link to submit your ninety (90) second video pitch. Writers must submit a video pitch in order to be a valid participant in Round 2. (For more information on how to opt-in through The Black List, please click HERE.)

Our partners at Sundance Episodic Labs will also select an additional ten (10) participants from their 2018 episodic program to advance directly to Round 2 of the ATX Pitch Competition. If your script is one of these ten selected by Sundance Episodic Labs, you will be provided a link to submit your ninety (90) second video and script writing sample. Though Sundance Episodic Lab’s 2018 submission window has closed, you can find out more information here if you are interested in submitting for 2019.

Remember: there is no conflict in submitting through all three, so if you do have a completed script to accompany your pitch, we highly encourage you to take advantage of these excellent opportunities through our partners!

Sponsor reserves the right (i) to disregard minor deviations from the guidelines in otherwise compliant Entries; and/or (ii) to obscure, remove, blur, or otherwise edit such elements; or to ask the applicable Entrant to obscure, remove, blur, or edit such elements in otherwise compliant Entries, and to consider any such edited Entries as eligible for the Competition.

SELECTION OF WINNERS

(a)  Judges. For each Round, a panel of 3-6 (or more) people selected by Sponsor (“Judges”) will evaluate the eligible Entries for the Round and will select the Entries to advance to the next Round. The Judges will consist of television industry writers, showrunners, executives, and other professionals.

(b) Judging Criteria. For each Round, the Judges will assign Entries a score ranging from a low of ten (10) points to a high of fifty (50) points for each of the following skill-based criteria (“Judging Criteria”):

  1. Series potential (would this be a TV show that audiences would like to watch?)
    • Episodic potential of series being pitched

  5. Script Sample
    • Does the script sample provided enhance the Pitch’s episodic potential? (i.e. Does the writing bring clarity to and/or reinforce the story’s world, characters, concept, and tone?)
    • Does the script sample provided showcase the Entrant’s ability to write the story being pitched?

In the event of a tie for a Semi-Finalist, Finalist, Runner-Up, or Grand Prize Winner, the potential winner as between any Entrants will be the Entry with the higher score for criterion one – Series Potential. Thereafter, if a tie still remains among any Entries, the potential winner will be selected based on the highest score for the subsequent criteria until the potential winner is determined – with the subsequent order of tie-breaking criteria to be as follows: criteria two-Description of the characters world; then criteria three-Clearness/Conciseness of the Pitch, then criteria four-Style, and then criteria five-Script Sample.
